San Juan Island Kayaking Trip Guide and Naturalist – Andrew Munson

Andrew is back for his 2nd season as a Sea Quest kayak guide in the San Juan Islands. Prior to joining us, he spent several months leading canoeing and hiking excursions in Amazon rainforest, and teaching environmental education in Puget Sound, Washington.

Andrew is an excellent naturalist who studies all aspects of our natural world, including that which is usually overlooked by more casual naturalists. Beside the charismatic megafauna like whales and eagles, Andrew also focuses on the tiny but equally important components of our natural world, such as fungi, marine invertebrates, and forest birds. He holds a science degree in Environmental Studies, is a Wilderness First Responder, and has taught English.

Look carefully and you can see a juvenile raven sitting on his lap that he rescued from drowning after it got knocked into the water by a bald eagle.

 He is a skilled man with tools and has crafted his own beautiful kayak from wood. Having grown up on a working farm in Oregon, Andrew’s thumbs are bright green and he is a wizard with a pitchfork and other gardening implements. He’s earned the knickname “Android” for his precision and efficiency with a kayak paddle, and can handle tough conditions on rivers and ocean surf.
