All sidebar photos are of Seascapes in
use on our sea kayaking adventures.

A note about the condition of our kayaks:
If you are interested in buying a used kayak in top-notch condition, then you've found the right place. Our used kayaks are ready for action! You won't have to make any repairs or do maintenance - they are ready to launch for your next expedition. They are also beautiful in appearance with a high gloss finish as nearly every boat is a year old or less. Some have only been used for a couple of days!

Although our kayaks have been put to work in our programs, they have never been rented or used without the supervision of our guides. Our kayaks are treated with the respect they deserve as high-performance sea-going craft. They are never rammed ashore when landing, or dragged over rocky beaches. You will find that nearly all other used kayaks on the market will have severe wear on their hulls and keels caused from ramming and dragging as this is the normal practice with most outfitters.

If you've shopped used kayaks before, you've probably noticed that most have severe wear on the decks from people scraping paddles across the surface during repeated strokes. Most outfitters sell used kayaks that have wear so severe that the entire layer of colored gelcoat has been abraded away in large patches. Here at Sea Quest we've put in extra time and expense to prevent this by applying clear "hurricane film" to these surfaces.

People frequently ask for photos of the boats. Unfortunately, we don't have time to stock photos of each boat in our fleet. But more importantly, photos on the web, or sent via email, simply do not have the resolution or detail to properly display the condition of a kayak. Only a visual inspection will do that, so we invite you to San Juan Island to see with your own eyes how beautiful our kayaks are - you won't be disappointed! For serious out-of-state buyers, we can provide photos by special request.

Used sea kayaks for sale can be inspected near Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington.

They can be shipped to any US location. We use a "private carrier" that specializes in transporting only kayaks, canoes, and shells. Each kayak is individually handled without the use of forklifts and is placed on its own rack instead of stacked on or below others. Private carriers can be a bit slower than normal trucking companies but the cost savings and special handling are well worth the extra time!

Private carrier shipping for kayaks is available anywhere in the US, and coastal states are served about every month or two. Centrally located states have much more infrequent delivery runs, sometimes only available in spring and summer, so patience can be essential if you don't live in one of the coastal states. Sample delivery fees usually costs from $300 (Southern California) to $500 (New York) for tandems/triples, less for solo kayaks.

Accessories and related equipment such as paddles, spray skirts and personal floatation devices.

You will see below that we also offer optional packages of used gear to go with the boats. They can also be purchased separately. Our Werner paddles are made locally and are considered by experts to be the best made paddles in the world. They are all two-piece and can be used unfeathered or feathered either right or left. The paddles are specifically sized for the different kayak models and have been used for only one summer. The package prices listed below is for the Skagit model, but for an additional $75 per paddle you can upgrade to the Camano model. Spray skirts are made by Snap Dragon, another high quality local manufacturer, and depending on the kayak you choose, can be made of either neoprene, neoprene/nylon, or vinyl (the same stuff dry bags are made from). Personal floatation devices - PFD's (life jackets) - are the Extrasport Challenger, specifically designed and shaped for sea kayaking.

The Seascape Expedition is the top-of-the-line model within the Seascape design family. We currently have two available for $2899 that have been used for 6 months and are in great shape. Deck color for these Seascape Expeditions are oyster white with white hull and black trim as shown in the photos. We also have several others for sale, having been used only 3 months and still possessing sparkling finishes, with a sale price of $3299. These newer boats are available with deck colors of oyster white, glacier blue, Caribbean green, and Aztec yellow. And finally, we have a Seascape Expedition made with an ultra-light layup that is approximately 30 pounds lighter than the standard layup. It has been used for 6 months and is selling for $3299. It has some upgraded features added including fiberglass bulkheads and custom backbands that replace the stock backrests.

The Seascape Expedition features a large cargo capacity and a long, graceful waterline. The speedy design makes it ideal for either extended trips with full loads or short day paddles. The hull features a modified-V bottom with soft chines, the same design that is used in today's highest performance solo kayaks. This hull shape allows the Seascape Expedition to handle just about any water conditions from open ocean, outer coast, calm inland lakes, to Class 2 rivers. They are one of the few tandems that can still move fast and remain highly maneuverable in rough waters.

The Seascape design family includes three fundamental models: the Seascape II, Seascape Expedition, and Seascape .5 ("Point 5"). The various Seascapes are the favorite of tour companies and outdoor programs throughout the world thanks to their excellent performance, quality workmanship, and durability. Like most top-quality kayaks of the modern era, all Seascapes have watertight compartments in the bow and stern separated from the main hold by bulkheads. This provides convenient storage for your gear, but more importantly, it ensures vital buoyancy in an emergency.

The Expedition model features more than just the standard bow and stern compartments. There is also a high volume airtight compartment in the center of the boat that doubles the buoyancy found in most tandem designs. A center hatch provides easy access to this completely separate bulkheaded compartment. Besides greatly improving floatation safety, this huge storage area protects your gear from getting wet, and provides much greater rigidity and strength to the hull. The most responsible kayaking outfitter companies always choose the Expedition model if they paddle on anything but the calmest lakes. Here at Sea Quest we feel our guests deserve the highest level of safety and convenience possible, so we only use Seascape Expeditions, even if it costs us a larger investment in equipment.

Although we like all of the Seascape models, we believe that each model has its own particular niche for differing water conditions. Which is right for you? Do you paddle paddle primarily in cold water? If so, you should opt for the added safety of the Seascape Expedition with its extra bulkheads and floatation. With proper practice, capsized kayakers using the Expedition can rescue themselves quickly, even in very rough water, thereby reducing exposure to hypothermia. If you paddle only in warm waters with little risk of hypothermia, then the Seascape II or Seascape .5 may suffice. On a related note, we thoroughly tested the Seascape .5 for a full year and determined that it is too short for use on open marine waters or other bodies that are prone to choppy wave conditions. We recommend the "Point 5" only for paddling on small lakes with warm water where it works extremely well as a speedy and stable substitute for the traditional canoe.

Seascape Expedition kayaks cost $4350 when new so our prices for lightly used kayaks are a bargain! For another $299 we can add a set of Werner paddles, Extrasport life jackets, and Snap Dragon spray skirts for two persons. The total package is about half of the retail cost when new. Although the kayaks have been used from 1 to 3 months they still possess a lifetime of usefulness. Remember, our Seascape kayaks are always used under careful supervision by our guides, are never rented, and are never abused or damaged. They are in beautiful condition!

Used Kayaks for Sale: Triples

Seascape 3 triple
by Northwest Kayaks

Length 22' 2"
Beam 29"
Cockpit 35" x 18.75"
Cockpit Depth
Fore: 13" Aft: 12"
Front Hatch 15" x 9.25"
Rear Hatch 20" x 14"
Weight 105 lbs
Load Capacity 900 lbs

We have only one Seascape 3 kayak for sale at this time. It has a white hull and glacier blue deck with black trim. It has been used only part-time for a span of five months. Our triples are used far less frequently in our program compared to tandem kayaks so this kayak is in great condition.

The Seascape 3 is very similar to the Seascape Expedition, but with a very useful distinction. It features an additional cockpit for a total of three cockpits. Here at Sea Quest we have made a commitment to provide the safest sea kayaks for our guests, so we have the factory add two additional bulkheads to our Seascape 3's. Each cockpit in our triple kayaks is therefore separated by a water-tight bulkhead for unparalleled safety! Our custom bulkheads are not the plastic kind that you find in most kayaks. Ours are made of fiberglass and bonded to the hull for the greatest strength and long-lasting durability. Another bonus is that our triple kayaks are outfitted with special backbands that replace the standard backrests.

The Seascape 3 is both slightly longer and narrower that the Expedition tandem, providing an even faster hull speed. In fact, this is one of the fastest kayaks in production today. The deck is also a bit lower to reduce its profile in windy conditions.

Sea kayaking with killer whalesThe three cockpits and four bulkheads make the Seascape 3 a highly versatile kayak. Families often choose this boat as the center cockpit is ideal for safely taking out children, seniors, and the family dog! The extra cockpit is also ideal for persons with disabilities who want to experience the enjoyment of kayaking. And finally, three able-bodied paddlers can really make this boat fly! But if you only have two paddlers, it can be used as a very fast tandem by covering the center cockpit with a hatch. The middle cockpit can also store a tremendous amount of camping gear so this kayak can also serve as a superb tandem for longer trips and expeditions. Our Seascape 3's were specially built so that the center seat is easily removable in these situations.

The price for a used Seascape 3 kayak is $3499. (This boat costs $4750 when new as equipped with the extra features.) For another $449 we can add a set of paddles, life jackets, and spray skirts for three persons. The kayak price alone represents a savings of a $1850 off the retail cost when new! The triple kayaks have been used part-time for only 3 months or less, so they are in near factory show room shape and will last a lifetime of normal use. Our boats are always used under careful supervision and are never abused or damaged.

Tempest by Wilderness Systems: used kayaks for sale

The best high performance kayak made in America! We have one Tempest 165's in stock that is selling for $1399 - this kayak is red and has only been used for guide training and a few demos. We also have three Tempest 170's in our sale inventory. The 170's have been used by our guides during tours for a period of 2 months and are selling for $1299. All of our Tempest colors are selected for excellent visibility and safety on the water so we are only stocking red, yellow and mango boats.

The Tempest kayak series has taken the Greenland Inuit design philosophy to its utmost. These kayaks are much smaller in volume than the Discover and lend themselves most favorably for paddling in extreme conditions by persons with well developed bracing skills. The Tempest 165, being the shortest, narrowest, and having the most pronounced rocker is particularly well suited for playing in surf and rock gardens. Both are great for paddling in high winds, rips, and tidal races.

Adding to their ruggedness is construction from high-density, extremely rigid polyethylene plastic. They are a few pounds heavier than fiberglass kayaks of a similar size, but much lighter, stiffer, and smoother than earlier types of plastic kayaks you may have known in the past. You can crash land in the surf onto rocky shores, or accidentally drop your Tempest from your roof rack without damaging it beyond a few shallow scratches.

Rather than being outfitted with rudders, the Tempest series is outfitted with a retractable skeg that can be adjusted for any type of wind or sea conditions. A few other notable differences from our other solo kayaks include an extra bulk-headed compartment aft, with an additional "day hatch" for access. The cockpit outfitting provided by Wilderness Systems is beyond compare with any other manufacturer - the patented Phase3 system. The comfort, adjustability, and control provided by the cockpit fitting system is unparalleled in the world of kayak design and has set the bar for all other manufacturers to aspire towards.

Tempest 165 kayak for sale

Both of the Tempests are fantastic for paddling on camping trips with full loads, but their capacity is more limited than our Discover kayaks, especially the Tempest 165. The Tempests really excel when taken on day paddles or weekend trips as these lighter payloads allow them to be used to their full potential. Like our other solo boats, they can handle open ocean, outer coast, calm inland lakes, and Class 2 rivers, but you can also add surf zones, tidal races and rips, and rock gardens.

Normally, these boats retail for $1600 when new so our prices are quite a bargain! For another $229 we can add a paddle, life jacket, and neoprene spray skirt that are all of top quality and in excellent condition and used only for a few demos. Remember, our current bunch of used Tempests have been paddled for only 2 months and are in fantastic condition Our solo kayaks are always used exclusively by our guides and therefore have never been abused or damaged. Common carrier shipping is available anywhere in the US if you are not able to pick the boat up in Washington State and usually costs from $150-$300 (for an exact quote call the trucking company of your choice). Discover
by Northwest Kayaks

Length 17' 11"
Beam 22"
Cockpit 35" x 18.75"
Cockpit Depth
Fore: 12" Aft: 9"
Front Hatch 9.5"
Rear Hatch 16" x 11"
Weight 59 lbs
Load Capacity 400 lbs

We have three Discover models available at this time. Two have been used for only a few months by our guides and the other has been used for about 6 months. The two newer kayaks have deck colors of either Caribbean green or Aztec yellow and are selling for $2199. Our other Discover is glacier blue and has some gelcoat defects so it is selling for the bargain price of $1999. All have oyster white hulls and black trim. The Discover costs $3200 when new so these sale prices for our nearly new kayaks represent a great discount!

The Discover is another solo touring kayak inspired by designs originally created by Greenland Inuit paddlers. A bit more true to the "native" form, the Discover is very slender, sleek and low profiled. It shares the same design philosophy and uses the same super solid construction materials and techniques common to all Northwest Kayaks. The Discover tracks well and carves sharp turns when leaned due to the soft chines. Other features include a modified-V hull and a retractable rudder with locking footbraces. We seldom need to use the rudder except in winds that exceed 15 knots.

The long waterline and narrow beam makes the Discover quite speedy. The narrow beam does reduce the initial stability somewhat, but on the other hand, the narrow beam makes it less prone to become unbalanced when powerful waves sweep past and beneath its hull, making the Discover a good choice for rough water. As such, it has been outfitted with safety lines around the perimeter to help make rescue operations more reliable.

The Discover carries a huge load for extended camping trips, but they are nimble enough for day paddling. They can handle open ocean, outer coast, calm inland lakes, and even Class 2 rivers. The Discover has become the most popular kayak among our guides for use on our camping expeditions, and many select it first for day trips as well.

For another $229 we can add a paddle, life jacket, and spray skirt that are all of top quality and in excellent condition having been used only for a few demos. The total package of kayak and gear is $660 lower than the retail cost when new. The Discover models currently for sale have been used briefly, and exclusively by our guide staff. They look fantastic and are virtually new kayaks! Private carrier shipping is available anywhere in the US if you are not able to pick the boat up in Washington State and usually costs from $150-$300.
